About the artist

Juan was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico, where he studied architecture. He gained his initial experience working in Mexico City, then in 1982 he was awarded a British Council scholarship to take a post graduate degree in urban design and regional planning at Edinburgh University. He settled permanently in Scotland, which has since become his adopted home.

Interwoven with his professional journey, and from an early age, he has sketched and painted for personal pleasure and satisfaction. He has always been fascinated by shapes, forms, light, shadow, contrast, colours and perspective, and driven by a personal need to capture and record his surroundings. His sketches, portraits and townscapes record places and memories that are special to him: geographically diverse and spanning a chronology of over three decades.

His work brings a fresh and different perspective to what might be familiar landmarks or buildings, which he is able to capture directly or from photographs.
